Nine-year-old, Thoroughbred cross gelding, Burr Oak, was diagnosed with Grade 2 gastric ulcers over a year ago and his owner, Tilly Tilbrook, was advised to feed a chaff-based feed due to the benefits chaff can provide to horses with ulcer issues.

Tilly wanted to feed a molasses-free chaff so she opted for Mollichaff High Fibre Alfalfa as the alfalfa is also beneficial in keeping her horse’s pH level of his stomach more alkaline and the presence of straw in the chaff means there is more long fibre to buffer the stomach during exercise which helps guard against splash ulcers.

Mollichaff High Fibre Alfalfa provides a low energy feed and is ideal for horses and ponies that are overweight or need a low energy diet. It carries the Hoof Kind logo to show that it is safe to feed to laminitics.

This tasty feed is made from UK grown alfalfa mixed with high quality oat straw, natural mint and a light dressing of soya oil. It does not contain any molasses. Alfalfa is a good source of natural vitamins and minerals and contains a sugar level that is considerably lower than grass. Mollichaff High Fibre Alfalfa contains the nutrient-rich leaf as well as the stalk of the plant and is high in fibre and low in sugar and starch, offering a far more natural feed to replace cereals in the diet without causing fizziness or excitability.

Mint contains flavanoids that act to relax the digestive tract and is commonly used as a digestive aid in horses. Its aroma and taste is particularly appealing to horses and ponies making it suitable for fussy feeders.

Said Tilly:“As well as using Mollichaff High Fibre Alfalfa in Burr Oak’s regular feeds, I also give him a double handful about 30 minutes before exercise. Since being on this product he has been rescoped and there was no recurrence of the splash ulcers and so we know the Mollichaff is working to act as a long fibre buffer layer in his stomach during exercise.”

“As a result, he has gained condition, muscled up and is able to work correctly for the first time in years. He has completely changed shape and is a much happier and healthier looking horse. I am so pleased that with the help of Mollichaff I have managed to prevent the splash ulcers from coming back and have the added bonus of knowing the price is very cost effective!”
